A Te Horo Beach Christmas

Awake in strange bed to new birdsong and sun drenched hills.
We sip ginger tea and read notes to a gardener ~

The blackbird’s built a nest and the tui’s delightful
Please separate bulbs under pōhutukawa tree
should bloom beautifully ~ Maria

In the garden we inspect wasps building a nest on a driftwood shed
and pass by a lady knitting out on a sunny deck
and hear a hearty Hi from a sleigh of cyclists flying by

This is the old bus cafe bedecked with bunting
and cut-out coke can stars, jangling silver and red

We take away Americanos and flat whites
and walk past huge clusters of aloe vera
Leaves like crackers snapped to calm warm skin

We sip and soothe away the winter blues whilst kids climb trees
Caroling in the long summer holidays and ahead the sea.
