Turquoise Shoes

1982 and mum’s size 4 turquoise shoes
(sparkly diamonds on pointed toes)
fitted me and we sneaked off to show and tell
with the white patterned socks
pulled up to each knee
they peeked out from under my desk
and gazed lovingly up at me
I listened to my quick trip trap
echo down the corridor
these shoes I’d longed for
wore me louder than the bell.
At home, she wondered
where on earth they could be.
